Irth Online Starts Beta 3

Irth Online is ready for another round of beta testing as they move into the third iteration.  Of note for a lot of readers will likely be the inclusion of artistic assets from the cancelled Mutable Realms game, Wish.  (BTW, here's an article pondering What Went Wrong with Wish.)  Since the game (Irth Online) is slated for launch in "mid-September", this is to be the final beta if all goes well.  I need to get my butt in there to check it out, but maybe others can chime in about their experiences?  Go ahead, register and post a comment if you want!

Iron Realms launches new portal for text-based MMORPGs

IronRealms Entertainment just put up a redesigned site to support their free text-based MMORPG offerings.

“We take the ‘gameplay over graphics’ mantra very seriously,” said Matt Mihaly, CEO of Iron Realms.  “Our games offer a level of immersion unrivaled by even the most popular of the graphical online games on the market.”

With tens of thousands of players and growing, gamers around the world are already making a bold statement about the importance of a ‘virtual world’ over an ‘online game.’

Shot Online realtime golf game launches

Well, I really came close to my first goofy headline like "Shot Online tees off" or "Shot Online tee time", etc... I don't play golf much, so my lingo vocabulary just wouldn't allow me to venture any further into that unknown territory. I'm sure you're happy about that.

At any rate, the news is that OnGameNet has launched their very intriguing Shot Online realtime online golf game! Very cool. I've seen discussion of this elsewhere, notably on Penny Arcade.. but that's not the link to their comments... whooo no, I'm not that efficient (couldn't find it). However, here's a page on the OnGameNet site with bits of news and quotes, including some P-A comments that I'm alluding to.

Yummy quote of the day for all you cheapskates out there: "While these online games are commercialised, they will still remain free to play, only requiring a small payment if you wish to purchase special items in the game." The "these games" bit is addressed in the following release, but it alludes to their upcoming Cartoon Racer game and the successful Ragnarok Online.

I'm still workin' on getting in there to try it out, but innovative games like these need immediate and enthusiastic support... after all, you'll be the ones to decide what ya think of them anyway. Just get over there to see what it's all about. You can also read more here to see the full press release...

EVE Online: Cold War Edition launches

The Icelandic (?) crew behind the incredibly beautiful EVE Online have launched a huge "content upgrade" to their game, called the EVE Online: Cold War Edition. I'm feeling a bit out of touch, not having tried this incredibly looking game yet... I'm a slacker, what can I say? I'm a big fan of epic-scale, deep-space environments, so I honestly have no excuse. Given this quote about this (free) expansion, I really want to try it out: "This upgrade introduces a whole new beginning player experience and lessens the learning curve for newcomers.” said Magnus Bergsson, CMO of CCP Games. “The Cold War Edition introduces a completely new approach to introducing players to the game, making it very easy for a new player to get started." I'm sure I'll get at least a few email from people proclaiming my doltness for not playing this yet... well, I'll get right on it. Full press release follows...

Mythic puts Imperator development on hold

Big news from Mythic about the development of their largely-anticipated title Imperator Online. That's the official site's main link, which is now forwarded to just display the following press release. They've put the project on hold in order to focus their support efforts on Dark Age of Camelot and their development efforts into Warhammer Online.

The announcement states up-front that they want to focus on the other games, but quotes from Mark Jacobs (CEO) like this sure paint a grim picture for the future of the title: "...in the final analysis it just wasn't great enough to be a Mythic game at this time."

Codemasters' new online gaming division gets casual

Some recent very interesting news from Codemasters (well, it sounds interesting.. we'll see how it turns out.) After previously shelving development on Dragon Empires (bummer), Codemasters has finally revealed their plans for online gaming that they've hinted at for a while now. I'll look into this more to see how it's coming along... and what the heck this really means, too. I'm mostly intrigued by their focus on the notion of "casual online gamers" and what they think it means to place a focus on them. Read on for the full press release...

Saitek Eclipse Keyboard on sale (SOLD OUT)

update: Sold out. If you hurry (and I mean really hurry.. it's 12am April 5 now) you can pick up a sleek new Saitek Eclipse backlit keyboard at Woot!. Honestly, it could be gone very quick now, but I just got one of these 'boards sent to me for review and I like it quite a lot so far. It's not perfect, but it's nice. I'll post more comments on it soon, but for now, if you like it, that price rocks! If you're not familiar with Woot! though, they sell one product each day and when they sell out, that's it for the day. Anyway, get over there if you're really into this 'board... but come back here when you're done.
