Server outages are teh suck

Something funky going on with the server this morning.  Sorry about the mess if things are reeeeeally slow or if the site goes down for a bit here...

WoW Meets Chinese Coke Babes

World of Warcraft meets Coca-Cola and Chinese babes... um, huh?

Really funny/cool/weird... lots of words come to mind. Just thought you'd want to watch it. Oh, and I'm sorry I just sent you to Google Videos, since you're going to blow 30 min. watching random junk. Very sorry.

Server down for a few

Sorry about the server outages happening today (about 4 hours) and recently... I'm working to resolve that crap since it's not too cool.  This was another one out of my hands, but it makes for a good deal of stress since I have about 20 sites of my own, plus a bunch of clients of mine hosted on this server, too.

Thanks for your patience.

GameDevSchool.com opened up

In case you're interested, I've opened up a new site at www.GameDevSchool.com.  It's intended to house a ton of the video game development info I've been collecting over the years... mainly the trove of info about middleware and game design/development tools I've been amassing since about 1998 or so.  I had been working on adding this stuff to a special developer section of MassMOG, but I finally broke down and set up a separate site for that stuff.  I'll be linking over there from time-to-time when I have game developer-centric info to post.

I'm also a member of several academic advisory boards for local colleges & tech schools that have video game design & development courses their implementing.  That's been a mixed bag, as some of them are doing it right and others are scaring me, honestly.  GameDevSchool.com is intended to hold a database of some of the school programs I've been learning about.  I'm not sure if I'll get into any kind of reviews (how on Earth would I review them, other than conceptually??), but mostly I want to point out what schools are trying to do.  Maybe I can get interviews or comment/forum posts from former/current students... don't know if it will grow to that point or not.

Anyway, if you're interested in game development and want to know more, GameDevSchool.com will hopefully start to give you some good research links and info.

Run over there if you'd like to check it out, but be sure to come back over the next weeks as the content starts to build up.  Thanks!  :)

Performance problem fixed

Soooooo stoked!  I was getting really sick of the major performance trouble with this site, but I found out what the problem was.  It looks to me that it's fixed now and things are running MUCH faster... like they should have been all along!  Other sites on this server, using the same CMS system, are super-snappy, so I'm sorry I didn't solve this crap sooner.

Oh, so much sweeter when things work like they're supposed to!

GDC was great... of course

I've had a very rough time figuring how best to discuss my experiences at this year's Game Developer Conference, since I did a lot of pondering about "casual games" and small/indie games finding their way onto consoles (ala Xbox Live Arcade and games like Marble Blast Ultra from Garage Games.)

The thing is, MassMOG.com is supposed to be all about massively multiplayer hoo-hah, so talking about how stoked I am on the development of casual goodies and smaller games doesn't feel right to post on the main site.   Well, good thing I set up my personal blog, eh?

I had a couple great chats with some big named folks in the industry and one was Richard Garriot.  The new path that Tabula Rasa is on has me excited and interested in the game for the first time.  I heard about it briefly a long while ago and I just wasn't sure what to think of it.  Richard has great ideas flowing from his head and his attention to detail and research about game design has me really intrigued by what's to come from his studio.  I'll talk more about that in an official post when I dig up my notes and fire a couple email to Richard for clarifications and maybe even a Q&A or something.  I'm slow on this news, so I'm sure you'll find some interviews and info somewhere.  Maybe I'll shine a different light on it when I get around to my take on it.

Auto Assault is going live soon and that has me very happy too... those guys have their studio on the other side of town from me and I know Scott Brown and Ryan Seabury somewhat now.  I really want them to succeed with that game mostly from a hope-my-friends-do-well perspective, but I also have a great deal of interest in growing our local game development community in the Denver region.  Good luck, NetDevil!!  :)

While I'm talkin' about Auto Assault, I'm proud to point you to the very sweet-looking Auto Assault Online Trading Card Game (TCG) made by my good friends at Worlds Apart!  These guys have already made some great TCG's, like the Lord of the Rings Online TCG.  If you like games of this ilk, their games will make you very happy.   You also just gotta play their fantastic game Star Chamber, which has gotten terrific praise as you'll see from their site.

Oh yeah, Will Wright is frickin' amazing.  I'm a game designer in a big part of my life and Will gets me fired up every year with his incredible presentations.  This year he spoke a great deal about the value of good, passionate research for game design/development... and astrobiology, which brought up a lot of Spore development discussions.  Good stuff.  I'll have to find some links to more detailed explanations of his talk, but for now, I'm just mentioning it since it was a highlight of the GDC for me.  Oh yeah.. got to chat with him for a nice bit on one evening.  Very approachable guy and I really enjoyed that discussion.

Hmmm... what else to briefly hit upon?...  The makers of Hero's Journey have pooled their resources to create a MMO game development kit/engine/thing (some info here) that you can license to create a MMOG.  It's a serious investment, like BigWorld, but it looked excellent and very promising.  They're both very impressive and I'll be compiling info about them in a different space.

The guys at Garage Games are on fire, did I mention that?  I'm so stoked for them and all that they represent in the game industry.  I hope they have continued, growing success, since I know they'll continue to share that success in various ways to the indie game development community.

Well.. that's a brief blast of info on my long week at GDC.  I met a ton of great folks and learned a lot of stuff, as usual.  I'll parse through my notes and try harder to sort this all out for you soon.  It's really a magnificent conference and I'm always glad I went.

Support WOXY.com Internet Radio

I know this is off topic, but hey, it's my blog, right?!?:

WOXY.com is a fantastic radio station.  If anyone remembers when they were on the air in Ohio, as "97X, the future of rock & roll", you'll know who I'm talking about.  The music pouring out of WOXY is incredible.. and abundant.

After the radio station frequency was sold off, the original 97X (which I was streaming on the 'net for a while) went away for a bit.  The station was resurrected on the WOXY.com domain and has been streaming high-quality alternative rock & roll free to lucky listeners all over the Web.  They play new artists very frequently and the pulse of the "alternative" scene is well within their grasp... forget that, their feel for Damn Fine Music is impeccable!   There's even another stream they set up for older catalog music called WOXY Vintage.  Great, great older tunes when I'm in the mood to reminisce... or to discover older stuff I wish I'd have known about back when it was new.

Well, I love this music stream, as you may see by now.  They have live DJ's from when the station was on the airwaves and they're all fantastic.  Seriously, go check out this rare gem of excellent music. NOW!

Now for the reason I'm posting this... they need our help to stay online.  The switch to "user supported" status is underway and they're looking for subscribers.  I listen to this station very near all day, every day and I can't imagine going back to the way it was for me before I found WOXY!  To put together a similarly amazing variety of music while I work at this darn computer machine all day would be impossible.  I don't want this history-drenched beauty to fade away.

Please, please go check out their music streams to see what you think about it.  If you like it, SUBSCRIBE!!  These are some fantastic people who've worked very hard over the years to assemble the most incredible music collection I've ever seen.  What they've done for the indie/alternative rock scene should not be underestimated.

Well... short of begging some more, I think you get the idea.  WOXY.com rocks!  I don't want to live without it... I will, but I don't want to.  $10/month is so close to nothing for what I get out of this station...  listen to it for a few hours or a day, but sign up soon, before it's too late!!

Google sitemap turned on

We'll see how this affects traffic around here, but I've implemented the whole Google sitemap thing using a module on the site.  It's pretty slick, but we're already pretty well indexed on Google.  Anything can help, though.  I can use more traffic.

...of course, if I would just stop messing with things like implementing sitemap or tweaking the backend system and add some frickin' articles, I'll be the traffic would find its way here anyway!
Yeah, yeah.  I'm workin' on it.  The new Game List and Glossary are interesting elements, assuming I find good ways to implement them (or utilize them, as it were.)

Again, I thank you for your visit and hope you'll drop in again.  The traffic's been increasing over the past couple months and I want to keep the trend alive.  I've had much larger traffic levels many times over the years, but we'll try to make this one stick.  Thanks!
