"Ask Cryptic July 11, 2008" - Champions Online Dev Blog

This is one of a long line of Q & A posts done by the good folks over at Cryptic Studios. Today (well, a few days ago, more accurately) the questions revolve around character leveling, in-game stats, powers, costumes and such. I figure I'll just point you there instead of trying to summarize... yeah, I'm that lazy. :P

Ask Cryptic (July 11, 2008)

Upgraderrific! MassMOG v. 7 Lives!

Actually, I have no clue which "version" this site is at. It's been a looooong time since the whole thing started. Roughly in 1999, I think -- I'm sure someone will email me about it. :P

Anyway, here we are again with another back-end upgrade to the latest version of the wonderful Drupal CMS-type site thingie! I'm stoked. I've been working with Drupal 6 for a while on other sites and it's really slick. Yeah, that's boring to most of you, so we'll leave it at that. Get more info on Drupal here if you want it. I don't mind supporting that project.

So I'm sorting out a new schedule for my work weeks that I really hope will include very regular posts on MassMOG.com (along with many other sites of mine.) This should mean that people will have something to read when they get here... imagine that.

Thanks a TON for dropping by. If you're new, then WELCOME! If you're a veteran... suffice to say, I know it's been slow here for a long time. I'm working on that.

Thank you for your support and visitorship!

[update -- yeah, I know the colors suck. I'll get it changed soon! Promise! (please stop emailing me! :-P )]

Richard Garriott's Tabula Rasa Launches

You all know about this game, I'm guessing. I'm going to talk more about it later, but I figured you'd want to know (or be reminded) that Tabula Rasa (well.. "Richard Garriott's Tabula Rasa ", actually) is going live for the non-preorder folks tomorrow, November 2. I just came back from the store where I saw a pile of boxes, so maybe you can get online today. Anyway, the game is very interesting and a lot of fun from what I saw during beta. I'll get into the live version soon to see how it's going and report back later. The buzz has been pretty good overall, so this should be interesting.

Disney's Pirates of the Caribbean Online Launches

[I was going to summarize, but hey... you know I'm lazy, so here's the pasted press release: --Hoza]

Intent Software’s free MMORPG Astonia goes live

A bit of "congrats!" is in order as the team at Intent Software has launched their new Astonia world Urd out from beta. The announcement from Alexander J. von der Geest at Intent says: "During the one month beta test Astonia attracted 10.000 registered players. Astonia is free to play. Players can upgrade to paid premium accounts, which offer even more game features."

Well... that's it for a quick "press release comes in, so I post it" moment. Now, if you can all just get me to do that every day, you'll be standing in freezing rain of fire, 'cause it will be a cold day in He... wait. That's not really what I meant to say...

BatMUD: The Age of Exiles

[Let's just get to the point... here's the announcement as it came into my mailbox:  --Hoza]

BatMUD (http://www.bat.org/) , the now 17-year old online Fantasy game Veteran has renewed its strategies in order to respond to the Commercial onslaught of MMORPGs of the later date; and has turned partially graphical. By providing an up-to-date Java-based lightweight Game Client, it shifts the whole MUD Community towards the younger MMORPG generation.

In their prime, text-based hack & slash MUDs were thought as the most advanced multiplayer online games feature-wise, already having implemented with such features as City ownership and very deeply customizable guild, skill and spell paths; and by utilizing the 'most powerful graphics engine' of all time - your own imagination. BatMUD has lived up to its promise, by still being one of the most diverse games available on the Internet, with constant development during its 17-years of existence. Generally, back in the day, MUDs were thought as terribly hard to adapt to due to the text-based playing style, but BatMUD's new Game Client shifts the odds on this and does its job remarkably well without losing the old magic feeling of playing a true MUD.

Screenshots and feature list available at http://www.bat.org/batclient/ , the Client is a Free download and playing includes no hidden charges. Take a look at this ancient game, which truly re-introduces the word newbie into your consciousness, properly written.

Boo!

Blah.

Server outage

Server was down for almost a day... sux0rz!  Should be working okay now.  (Just in case you're curious if you've been wondering if the site got shut down over the past day. :)

Warmonger and LEGO Universe Info From NetDevil

I'm a bit out of order on this, but I wanted to point out that Jumpgate Evolution wasn't the only game that NetDevil revealed at their sweet 10th anniversary party last night.  They also let us play an 8-player setup of Warmonger and they showed some great little movies of where the LEGO Universe MMO game is heading.

I'm actually just going to point you guys to the article & liveblog posted by Brian over at Kotaku.  That guy makes me realize how weak I am at updating my site, since he does things like post the video for a game an hour before said video is shown for the first time.  LOL... that's a scoop!  Freak, he is.  ;)

Anyway, he's got some great views on what we saw at NetDevil, and I can't think of why I should try to do any more than that for now.  I'll write up my own thoughts more later... both Warmonger and LEGO Universe have me very excited, but for different reasons, and I need to go outside to enjoy this nice Saturday afternoon for a bit.

NetDevil Unveils Jumpgate Evolution.. and Cool New Offices!

Last night, I was happily eating, drinking and chatting at the super-cool new offices of NetDevil in Louisville, CO. I've been talking to the guys over there for a while about the new place, but I was pretty blown away at how sweet it is. I'm so damn stoked for these guys! They've done really well over the years (10th-year anniversary, btw) and I wish all the best for this terrific crew. Regardless of the commercial success of their games up to now (I'm not in a mood to discuss that stuff), the company has grown immensely and has put together a great environment for future development. They've retooled development processes (go Agile!) and gotten much better at evolving their products to be fun and engaging through the development cycle.... ooh, a segue... (read more )
